Pollution of the water of the Buriganga
Answer: Mahzabeen, Dhaka, 17 December 2014: The Buriganga is threatened by pollution and possession. The water of this river has become pitch black and it is hardly recognized as water. There are many factors responsible for the present condition of the Buriganga River. The chemical waste of mills and factories, household waste, medical waste, sewage, dead animals, plastics, and oil are some of the Buriganga’s pollutants. The most important of all is that the river is the main outlet of sewage waste of Dhaka city. About 80% of the sewage of Dhaka is untreated. A number of industries, including tanneries also discharge their chemical waste into the river. Experts identified the industrial areas in and around the capital city as the primary sources of river pollution. Most of the industrial units of these areas have no sewage treatment or effluent treatment plants (ETPs) of their own. Moreover, because of heavy reliance on river transport for goods, including food, the Buriganga receives especially high amounts of food waste since unusable or rotting portions of fruits, vegetables, and fish are thrown into the river. It is now a dying river and the situation will get worse unless steps are taken urgently to reverse the current trend of pollution.
