Bangladesh is a land of the river. When the banks of the rivers are inundated, the situation is called a flood. Most of the lands of our country are low-lying. As a result, she is often visited by floods. Sometimes there are floods for some days and even for some months. The reason for causing floods n heavy rainfall. The water of the heavy rainfall gives rise to over-flow the rivers and rushes away both sides. Earthquakes often cause floods. Heavy rush of water from the mountains also causes floods. In Bangladesh, floods are caused due to heavy rains. Floods cause great havoc. They wash away houses, cattle, crops and uproot trees. People become homeless. They suffer much. Their normal life is disturbed. They remain without food for days together. The after-effects of floods are more serious. People do not get pure drinking water. Famine breaks out. Many die for want of food. Many fatal diseases like cholera, dysentery, diarrhoea etc. break out. The sufferings of people know no bound. Terrible floods occurred in Bangladesh in 1954, ’55, ’74, ’87, ’88 and ’98. The northern districts were affected at first. Then floods spread in Dhaka. Mymensingh, Comilla, Ssirajganj, and Rajshahi. The greatest and longest flood causing loss of some thousand cores 0 take-ups and about one thousand persons died in 1998. Floods do us some good. The floodwater brings much silt and masses our land alluvial and fertile. As floods visit us every year, we must try to stop floods. Rive-beds should be depending to make the regular flow of water. Embankments should be made. we should be up and do to control flood.
