Introduction: modern age is an age of science. It serves much more than newspapers, radio sets and other means of mass communication. It has now become an indispensable part of our life. Television is one of the greatest wonders of modern science and technology.
What it is television: television is a compound word consisting of two Latin words – ‘Tele’ ‘vision’. They mean seeing something from a distance. Television produces both pictures and sounds that are seen and heard at the same time. It was invented by an English scientist called John Baird in 1926. It is needless to speak of the importance of television in our life.
Means of communication: television is the most modern means of communicating our thoughts and ideas. It’s like a stage on which we can see the performers and their doings and hear their Talking’s. We also hear the speeches of the famous personalities of the world. John Lahr says,
“In front of the small screen,Life becomes fiction, and fiction life.”
Means of recreation: television is one longer an article of luxury. It serves as a great means of recreation. We can sit before a television set after day’s hard work and enjoy ourselves with songs, dances, plays and other amusing things. We can enjoy games and sports from both home and abroad on TV screens without going to the playground.
Means of education: television is an effective means of mass and adult education. It plays an important role in teaching the illiterate and the students. We hear and enjoy debates, lectures on various important topics, discussion on science and technology through television. Model teaching can also be imparted through television. It has broken down the wall between the literate and the illiterate.
Means of forming a public opinion: television serves as a powerful means for moulding and influencing public opinion. The government lets the people know about its administrative policies, development programmes and probable suggestions about ways and means to execute them through television. Political parties also get the privilege to preach their party manifesto through television.
Means of a developing country: television serves as a means of developing the national economy of the country. The specialists and experts in different sectors of the country talk about the ways and means to solve the problems facing the country. Ti goes a long way to gear up the economy of the country. It acts as a demonstration among the people.
Demerits of television: there is nothing on earth which is an unmixed blessing. Television has also some dark sides. Out young boys and girls are seen sitting before television set hours after hours. They are greatly attracted by the obscene pictures and films shown on television. It not only hampers their studies but also demoralizes them. Taylor said,
“Cultural perversion might lead the young generation the contamination and destruction.”
Conclusion: thus we find that the importance of television in our lives can never be underestimated. We cannot think of life today without the existence of television. It has made the world smaller and brought the world people to live under the same roof.
