- Use body language: Pointing and body language will help you get your point across.
- Bring paper and a board where you can write and draw numbers (as a substitute for your verbal language).
- Provide pen and paper to the person (the seller) when you do not understand how the price/cost of goods things; most people would be more like it.
- You go to the bookstores that sell trinkets trip and look for books or laminated cards with pictures/items related to food, lodging, transportation, and entertainment, this will be very useful when you are in the restaurant and hotel.
- If you take a small phrase book or dictionary, you can search for and prepare the words when you are in the rest area.
- Be aware that your words and name brand of English are almost universally understood: the U.S., taxis, OK. Bunch of words together and creatively, and then you will be surprised how much you can accomplish.
- Ask for other language skills. Going to ‘unique’ countries like Bosnia, Uzbekistan, Poland, or Turkey is certainly interesting, but what about the language itself? Ask people you meet who do not speak or master a language other than the native language. You may try to communicate Spanish in Brazil, Russian in the former Soviet Republic; or the French language in almost all Europe countries. So if you master another language, although a little bit, could be useful to facilitate communication.
- Let the pictures tell the story. Take a photo of your house, your family, or anything important for you to share with the people you meet on the road.
